Push-pin Slime Mold / Hemitrichia calyculata
An inconspicuous but fascinating slime mold from the Amoebozoa group – so it is neither a fungus nor a plant. It spends most of its life as a mobile, slimy mass called a plasmodium, slowly crawling over wood and feeding on bacteria.
The photo shows its final stage – it creates tiny "push-pins" where the spores mature. Once released, they are dispersed by the wind. The entire structure is only about 1–3 mm tall. Interestingly, inside the cup is a delicate network of threads called capillitium, which helps in the proper release of the spores.
